The Mercearia d'Alegria B&B is located in Peniche de Cima, one of the first districts of Peniche. This neighborhood is rich in stories and we are located in a street that was once one of the busiest in Peniche, having frequent traditional events that brought together the whole community.
In this neighborhood there were, in the 30-40s, several tabernas (which means taverns in Portuguese), trading houses and a sardine can factory where 200-300 people worked. It was in this context that Miss Isabel's grocery store was born. She was known for helping the neediest families in the neighborhood and perhaps that is why, even today, we hear of Miss Isabel with a lot of affection.
As we want to keep these memories alive, we've got inspired by the history of Miss Isabel and recovered not only the stories but the whole concept of a grocery store of that time, to create our Boutique B&B. The name of Mercearia d'Alegria was inspired by the fact of having the B&B located just in front of this historical grocery store (Mercearia in Portuguese).
At Mercearia d'Alegria all decoration is inspired by products and utensils that were used by Miss Isabel. In our reception you can find beside several historical photographs, an antique scale, a cabinet where cereals were stored for sale, antique chairs, water containers, old bottles, used at the time, and even some products that survived to this day. Our rooms also combine the same concept with some details of old and reused pieces with all the comfort and quality of our days.
